Photography, travel, and a worksop - does it get any better?

Okay, maybe add a cup of good coffee and a cranberry orange scone.

I’m Catherine Zdeblick and I started taking photos at a young age. One of my first memories is dressing up with my little brother and taking polaroids of him as a sailor, a baby, posing him with life size dolls, and sitting him in an oversized laundry basket. ( I wish I still had the photos ).

As I raised my family I added photos to our scrapbooks. Then, I realized I wanted more out of my photography. That’s when I discovered photo workshops. Now, I have attended over 50 workshops thru the years.

Once you understand the basics of how your camera works you need a subject to photograph. Some people are lucky and find their passion in landscape, portrait, street photography, abstract, architecture and so on. I like it all and thru workshops I have explored the different areas and styles of photography.

I never realized what a thrill it was to photograph lions, cheetahs, elephants and chimps only a few feet from me and my camera. The excitement that comes from chasing storms until I was face to face with a tornado. A few years ago I went to Mongolia and was able to photograph the eagle hunters and their eagles hunting. I’ve traveled to Paris specifically to photograph dancers. You feel the connection with people when you are making cultural portraits of “new” friends in Mongolia, Kenya, and Namibia. In Alaska you learn how to stay out of the way of hungry grizzlies while photographing their salmon fishing techniques.

Okay, I still have not landed on a specify genre of photography. Don’t know if I ever will. I do know I want to keep exploring different places, people and styles.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I make photos that I like. It’s all about me getting lost in the moment and making a photo that brings joy to my heart and hopefully a smile to your face!
